Alupe University has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development following its participation in the 2026 National Mazingira Day celebrations held on Saturday, 10 October 2026, at Senyende Forest, within the Kakamega Forest ecosystem in Kakamega County.
A delegation of Alupe University students participated in the commemorative event, which brought together representatives from universities, technical and vocational training institutions, government agencies, organizations and local communities to promote environmental stewardship and collective action towards restoring and protecting Kenya’s natural ecosystems.
The event was graced by Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, Principal Secretary, State Department for Higher Education, Ministry of Education, and supported the Government’s 15 Billion Tree Growing Initiative. The celebrations were held under the theme, “Our Environment, Our Responsibility: Collective Action for Tree Growing and Environmental Stewardship.”
Dr. Morris Mwatu, representing Alupe University and the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Peter L. Barasa, underscored the importance of integrating environmental responsibility into university education and community engagement. He emphasized that universities have a critical role to play in nurturing environmentally conscious graduates, promoting sustainable practices and mobilizing communities to protect natural resources.
Dr. Mwatu further highlighted the value of student participation in national environmental initiatives, noting that practical engagement in conservation activities helps translate classroom knowledge into responsible action and cultivates a lasting culture of environmental stewardship.
In her address, Dr. Inyangala challenged universities and other institutions of higher learning to take a leading role in environmental conservation by establishing sustained tree-growing and aftercare programmes. She emphasized that tree planting should extend beyond commemorative events to include the consistent nurturing and monitoring of planted trees to ensure their survival and long-term environmental impact. She also called on institutions to work closely with surrounding communities to safeguard natural resources.
The participation of Alupe University students reflects the University’s commitment to producing graduates who are not only academically equipped but also socially responsible and responsive to contemporary environmental challenges. By engaging students in initiatives of national importance, the University continues to encourage active citizenship, collaborative problem-solving and a sense of shared responsibility for the well-being of present and future generations.
As Kenya advances its national tree-growing and environmental restoration agenda, Alupe University recognizes the importance of partnerships among higher education institutions, government agencies and communities in achieving sustainable outcomes.
Through such engagements, the University continues to position itself as a partner in community development and environmental sustainability, contributing to the broader national aspiration of a greener, healthier and more resilient future.
