On 9th April 2026, Alupe University and its surrounding areas, including high-density student residential zones, marked a significant milestone with the rollout of a solar-powered street lighting initiative aimed at enhancing safety and visibility.
The project, spearheaded by Teso South Member of Parliament, Hon. Mary Emase, was secured through the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC). Under this initiative, Alupe University has been allocated 32 solar-powered lighting units, which will be installed on concrete masts across the Alupe Complex. Implementation is already underway, with approximately 10 masts erected along the University Gateway, extending towards the ultramodern Amphitheatre Hall.
The project commenced following an introductory meeting that involved site identification and GPS mapping to determine precise installation points. The meeting, held on 11 February 2026, brought together the Teso South Constituency Office led by Office Manager Mr James Omuke, Alupe University staff, and REREC officials, including technical experts. The team was received by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Finance and Development, Prof. Mahero Toboso, representing the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Peter Barasa.
The meeting culminated in the formal handover of the site to the contractor, who is expected to complete the project before the end of the semester. According to Prof. Toboso, the street lighting project will significantly enhance security within the university and its environs, including areas around St John Schools, KALRO, nearby market centres, and residential estates hosting students.
