Alupe University reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing future media professionals by participating in the Students’ Journalism Expo organized by the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) in Kisumu on 5th July, 2026. Through its partnership with MCK, the University deployed six members of staff to mentor and inspire senior school students with an interest in media and journalism.
The University’s delegation comprised media and communication academics, media technologists, and administrative staff, reflecting Alupe University’s multidisciplinary approach to media education and student engagement. The team included Dr. Isaac Manje, Dr. Charles Omoga, Dr. Caren Jerop, the Media Team comprising Savai Sabwa and Victoria Magar, as well as Mercy Kombo from the Office of the Registrar (Academic Affairs).
The mentorship programme brought together more than 40 senior secondary schools with active journalism clubs, providing a platform for learners to showcase their talents while interacting with experienced academics and media practitioners. The initiative sought to equip students with foundational knowledge and practical skills in journalism, media ethics, communication, news writing, broadcasting, digital media, and responsible storytelling.
During the engagement, Alupe University staff offered career guidance, shared industry experiences, and encouraged learners to pursue careers in communication and journalism. The interaction provided students with valuable insights into the evolving media landscape while empowering them to make informed academic and career choices. The initiative also strengthened collaboration between Alupe University, the Media Council of Kenya, and secondary schools in promoting media and digital literacy among young people.
In recognition of their expertise in media and communication, three Alupe University academics were appointed by the Media Council of Kenya to serve as judges in various competition categories during the Expo. Dr. Charles Omoga, Head of the Department that hosts the Media and Communication programme, adjudicated the Sports Commentating category. Dr. Caren Jerop evaluated participants in the Live Interviews segment, while Dr. Isaac Manje served as judge for the News Reporting category, assessing the quality of news gathering, presentation, and reporting by participating schools.
Media Technologists Savai Sabwa and Victoria Magar provided technical support and mentorship to learners on media production and broadcasting, exposing students to the practical aspects of content creation and the technologies that drive today’s media industry. Mercy Kombo from the Office of the Registrar (Academic Affairs) also participated in the engagement, highlighting the University’s commitment to supporting learners as they explore academic pathways and career opportunities in communication and media studies.
Speaking during the event, Mr. Evans Teddy, the Media Council of Kenya’s Regional Coordinator for Kisumu and Western Kenya, noted that the Media and Journalism Expo is a flagship mentorship initiative aimed at strengthening student journalism clubs across the country while promoting media and digital literacy among senior school learners.
He observed that the programme is particularly relevant under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), where learners can pursue specialized pathways such as Media and Technology. Through such initiatives, students are exposed to practical experiences that help them identify and develop their talents as they prepare for future careers in the media and communication industry.
Alupe University’s participation in the Expo underscores its dedication to academic excellence, industry collaboration, and community engagement through initiatives that nurture talent, promote ethical communication, and prepare the next generation of media professionals.
